Bio

Walter Shaw is entering his 24th season as head coach and 28th season overall with Brunswick Community College Men's Basketball. Shaw currently leads NJCAA Region 10 as the active career leader in wins with 449 to his credit. Under his leadership the Dolphins have won NJCAA Region 10 Division One Regular Season titles in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2021 and 2022. They have also won Region 10 Tournament Championships in 2005, 2010, and 2021. His team have won Atlantic District Titles in 2010 and 2021. In 2008, 2014 and 2023 the Dolphins finished as the Region 10/Atlantic District Tournament Runner-Up.  Shaw has been named Region 10 and/or Atlantic District Coach of the Year in 2005, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2021.  In 2010, he led the program to the school's first appearance in the NJCAA Division One National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS.  The 2005 Region 10 Championship was the first in any sport for BCC. His 2021 team completed the feat as well with the first championship won on the Dolphins home court.

In his time at BCC 158 players have matriculated to four-year colleges or universities with 65 being a part of NCAA Division One teams. The players that have moved on have signed to 81 different colleges in 20 states. Ten of those players have helped their teams to the NCAA tournament and 15 have moved to the professional ranks in the US and abroad after they completed their college careers. Coach Shaw has coached ten NJCAA All Americans and 53 All-Region 10 players and two Region 10-D1 Players of the Year. For Coach Shaw, student/athlete success in the classroom and community is more important than success on the basketball court. This philosophy has allowed him to have a 96% matriculation rate of his sophomore players to four-year schools. Throughout the years, Shaw's players have also taken part in lunch-buddy, reading/tutoring programs and basketball clinics at local elementary schools. The Dolphins were chosen as one of the 50 best two-year programs in the country since the year 2000 by Basketball Times Magazine in its August 2009 issue and one of the most unheralded Division One junior college programs in the country in the November 2009 issue.

A native of Riegelwood, NC, Shaw was chosen as the BCC head coach in 2000 at 23 years old. He began his coaching career at BCC as a 19 year old assistant under the founding coach of the BCC program, the late Gene Doane. Prior to being named to the BCC coaching staff he worked as a student manager for Coach Jerry Wainwright and the 1995-1996 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Runner-Up UNC-Wilmington Seahawks. Shaw is a 1995 graduate of East Columbus High School in Lake Waccamaw, NC where he lettered in four sports: basketball, football, tennis and track. He is a 1999 graduate of UNC-Wilmington with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. He also holds a Master's Degree in Physical Education/Sports Administration from UNC-Pembroke as well.  He has served in many different capacities on the BCC campus throughout his tenure. Currently in addition to coaching basketball, he serves as the Director of the Health and Fitness Science Program. Also, he serves as the director of the BCC Holiday Basketball Classic, gym supervisor for Mid-Eastern high school basketball conference tournament and has served as the director of the Brunswick County high school Christmas Tournament.  In recent years he has also served on the parent advisory committees at both Supply Elementary School and Shallotte Middle School.

Coach Shaw is member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, North Carolina Coaches Association, and National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Coaches Association. He is also a member of NJCAA Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council.  In 2020 he was selected as a member of the Top Connect NJCAA Leaders Program inaugural class. He has been married nineteen years to the former Tamara Hannah of Rocky Mount, NC. They currently reside in Shallotte and have two daughters, sixteen year old Kendra, twelve year old Leah and ten year old son Walter Shaw Jr. (Monty).

The basketball court at Brunswick Community College gymnasium was named in his honor in November of 2021.
