Bio

Coach Gaughan is in his 10th year as head coach of the Lady Dolphins.  During his tenure the Lady Dolphins each year have made the Region X conference quarterfinal or higher, highlighted by the Lady Dolphins first ever regional semifinal appearance in 2012-2013 season. 2014-2015 team set a Lady Dolphin record for wins in a season and reached the  Region X semi finals .  Coach Gaughans team has a 98% graduation rate. In his time at BCC, 28 players have moved onto four-year colleges or universities representing 100% placement for graduating players desiring to continue their basketball careers. In 2020 Coach Gaughan became the Lady Dolphins first coach to reach 100 wins. 

For 12 years Coach Gaughan was the head girl’s basketball coach at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington, NC. During this time he became the school's all-time wins leader with 188 wins and a winning percentage just under 70%.  While at Cape Fear Academy Coach Gaughan achieved the most career wins in school history, three State Championship game appearances, state playoff bids in 11 of his 12 years, six Elite 8 State Tournament appearances, four State Tournament Final Four appearances, four regular season Conference Championships, three Conference Tournament Championship appearances, 2008 NCISAA.com 2A State Coach of the Year, and twice Conference Coach of the Year.

In addition to coaching at Cape Fear Academy, Coach Gaughan founded The Wilmington Hurricane AAU travel basketball team.   In just five years the program for grades 6th to 11th had grown to 68 active players.   The Wilmington Hurricanes have won eight tournament championships and have reached the USBA National Championship Final Four twice.

Coach Gaughan grew up in Scranton, PA, and Norwich, New York.  He attended Herkimer Community College and then graduated from Plattsburgh State University of New York.  He started coaching at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH, before taking over at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington, NC.  Coach Gaughan and his wife Karen of 31 years are the parents of three daughters.  Jessie, the oldest, graduated from Wilmington Christian Academy and  Erskine College. Jessie is a 5th grade English teach at Greenwood(SC) Elementary. Twins Danielle and Catie graduated from Wilmington Christian Academy and played on the Methodist University soccer teams.  Coach Gaughan also heads up the training for identifying and reporting child abuse at his church.
